Unity Tutorial Week 10

For this week for our unity tutorial we were asked to look up and find our own tutorials online that would help us with unity and creating our game.  I found this youtube channel called Brackeys. It is quite similar to jimmy Vegas but it was nice to listen to someone else explain unity in a different way.  He goes through things really slowly so it is easy to follow.  I've watched a few of his tutorials on making spheres and terrains. Like Jimmy Vegas he has loads of different episodes for different things.

Reading Week 10

I found this weeks reading week to be really good and interesting. I am really not good at taking critisism so it was nice to read an article about the positive sides of criticism. I like what he said how about how when giving criticism its good to concentrate on the things people can improve on rather then point out all the things they did wrong. He also said the main thing to concentrate on criticism and feedback is that its not unbiased and that factual. I like how part of the article he gives examples on the difference between good criticism and bad criticism.

Week 8 : Progress

Honestly I think I have progressed a lot in the past 2 weeks in this module. I am happy with the work I am doing but I know that I need to do even more because I am really behind. I have put in a lot of effort to this module and have been watching unity tutorials every night to try get a better understanding of how to use unity and how to go about creating my game, I am unfortuntely a really slow learner with Unity so I have to watch every video a few times to fully understand it. I have also been making notes on each unity tutorial so I can look over how to fix something in my game without having to rewatch a tutorial. I have a lot more unity tutorials but I am confident I will finish them in time. I will just have to do a few all nighters but if thats what it takes then I will do it!! I also have been set back a good bit unfortunately with the fact that I have to change my game due to not have enough time to create the Freddie the frog game. Although I am disappointed with not bei

Comments and Feedback Week 8

Overall I have not received much feedback on comments on my blogs, I wish people would write more on my blogs and give their opinions on my game ideas and my thoughts on readings. Although I have not received much feedback I still have some. Stephaine commented on my blog and said she liked the idea of my game and thought that it would be very well. She asked me am I going to make levels or make it endless. For my game I am thinking of making it in levels, so when you collect a certain amount of coins you move onto the next level. I thought about making it endless like the game flappy bird or temple run. But then I realised that it might be a bit boring so hopefully my idea of making it in levels will add excitement and determination to move onto the next level. I want to make levels harder to cause frustration in players making them want to move onto the next level more and more. I also thought about not making it about levels but making the game about trying to beat your high scor

Game research Idea ( NEW)

After realising that I did not have enough time to create the frog game that I wanted to I have decided to change my game, after doing some research I realise I want to do a pirate game. I am still in the process of planning the game but these are my ideas so far: Main Character  The main character of my blog will be Pete the Pirate. He will be a Pirate who is looking for gold coins. Goals The goal in the game will be to try collect as many coins as possible by following the guide lines given on a map. The guidelines will rhyme and will give clues to where the coins are. Rotation system  Pete the Pirate will be able to move varying on what buttons to press. He will be able to move in different directions. Enemy  I'm not sure if Pete the Pirate will have an enemy yet I was thinking of a shark but I want to research more.

Week 8 Reading

After briefly reading over my blog posts about my previous readings I think one of my favourite readings was the article called "Don't be a Vidiot" by Greg Crosiykyan,  I liked this blog post because the language was really simple and easy to understand, it was the first of the readings that got me to understand more about this course and what the content of a game should be. He explained how most games should have a main character, a goal , a enemy and a conflict. He also went on to explain some useful tips on first time game makers. After reading this article I realised that I should focus more on game play not the appearance or the story game.  Later in the article he goes onto explain how you can do almost anything with software. With software you can develop it and define it. Similar with games there is a crazy amount of different types of games. He uses the term "There is an entire universe of weird and wonderful gaming styles." This is why this is my fa

Reading Week 7

This weeks reading was very interesting I liked the article on a formal approach to game design and game research by Robin Hunicke and Marc LeBlanc. In the introduction he goes on to explain how all artefacts are created within some methodology. When I first read this I was very confused as I had no idea what the word "methodology" meant. After researching I found out that methodology is a system of methods used in a particular area of study or activity. He then explain how important it is when working with video games to approaching the task from both perspectives so you can consider a wide range of possibilities. He then went onto explain about MDA. MDA is Mechanics Dynamics Aesthetics. Games are created by designer/teams of developers and consumed my players. He then explains how they are then purchased and eventually cast away like most other consumable goods. I never really thought about games like that and it was interesting to get a different perspective.  It too

Vision statement

Introduction: Leaping lily pod is a game where Freddie the frog has to leap from different keypads to cross the stream Description: My game would be a action-adventure game. The main character of my game will be Freddie the frog. The main goal of the game will be to avoid falling into the stream and and landing on the lily pads. Other goal will be to catch flies with its tongue. I am thinking about having my game as though the eyes of Freddie the Frog but have not fully decided yet. The genre of my game is a platform game. Inspiration for Freddie the Frog: https://www.shutterstock.com/search/cartoon+frog Game play: game play is the features of a video game like the how it is played, graphics and sounds My game will be set in a sort of lake/ stream in a forrest. The main character will be Freddie the frog. He will have to leap from one lily pad to the next to cross the stream. The game will continue to go harder when the lily pads grow smaller making it diff

Game Research Idea

In my brainstorm for game ideas I explained my three game ideas that I could create for my project. The idea that I have thought is best to go forward with is the Frog jumping game. The frog jumping game is the game I am most interested in making. The main charcter in my hame is Freddie the frog. He is on a lily pad and is jumping from one to the other. He needs as much energy as he can as he has a long journey ahead, so he must try collect as many flies he can wit his tongue. If he falls into the water he will die as the water is dirty with disease (water will appear brown and dirty in the game). as the game goes on it will become harder as the lily pads will get smaller in size making it harder to land on. The current from the water will also make the lily pads move back and forward. I think from watching the unity tutorials I will be able to make this game successfully. Possible game mechanics: 1.   The main character-  The main character in my game will be Freddie the frog.

New blogger template!! (tech task)

I decided to change the template of my blog as I feel like this one suits my blog better. I have wanted to change my blog template for awhile now but could not find a template that suited me! As soon as I seen this template I knew straight away it was the one for me!! :)

Reading Week 5 (Games DD)

I found this week reading very interesting. I was particularly interested in Greg Aleknevicus post about Design Considerations. I liked the part of this reading about using shape and colour to distingush pieces. I never really thought about how much difference it can make to a game by using different shapes in addition to colour to distinguish the players amoebae. I also liked the where Greg explains how its good to use different components for different functions. An example of this is how Monopoly money is different from the property cards so players do not get confused between it is obvious they are used for different things. I thought it was a good point  of how it is frustrating when someone loses a part of their game and then is unable to play the game, so it is a good idea to add extra parts or cards with the game incase one is lost. I found this weeks reading really interesting.

Game Ideas

To be honest I really struggled to come up with a game idea as I do not play that much games and do not have much experience with different games. First idea: My first idea I am thinking of doing a game where there is a frog jumping from a lily pad. At the start of the game it will be easy enough just making the frog jump but as the game goes on it gets harder as there is more space between the lily pads to get extra points or lives the frog will try and catch flies. it will get harder than and the lily pads will be moving. Second idea: My second idea would be very similar to the game of Mario where a man is trying to save a princess but instead I would reverse the roles and have the princess saving the man. She would have to jump over enemies and run from gun shots to try save the man that has been kidnapped Third idea: My third idea would be a car racing game where someone would be in a car trying to escape a bank robbery. They are speeding away from the police and trying to

Unity tutorial one

First Youtube tutorial: For this tutorial I was explained how to download and start up the Unity Software by Jimmy Vegas. I found this part really easy and explained well. He started going through the basic guidelines on Unity and how to start up a new project. I was able to follow his instructions clearly and found his guidelines easy to follow. Then he started explaining how to add a basic 3D shape like a sphere or cube into the game, I was able to add shapes into the game no problem. I then was shown to add a terain and change it around like its shape, size and height. This ere I started to get confused but after trying it a few times and looking up information on other sites I got the hang of it pretty quickly. Second Youtube tutorial: For this tutorial I was explained on how to apply textures. He explained how to download and install the textures needed into Unity. I then applied them to try create a mountain in my game. This part I was really confused by and will try get help

Game Design Reading Week 2

Designing games by Tynan Sylvester After completing the reading assigned to us for Week 2 I have learnt a lot of new things I did not know before.  When I read the first piece we were given "Don't be a Vididiot"by Greg Crositkyan http://www.costik.com/vidiot.html . He explained gaming in a really simple way which I liked as I am not very familiar of the different types of games. He explained how a game is a play activity with rules that involves a conflict.  Then I read another post called "The essence of Eurostyle gaming" by  Lewis Pulsipher  http://www.thegamesjournal.com/articles/Essence.shtml  , . Before reading this I had never even heard of a "eurostyle" game. I then read the post and got a better understand of what makes a game a eurostyle game.  Euro games have great visual interest, simple rules, no player elimination and the game does not take more than an hour to play. Reading this article gave me a better understanding of different ga

Workshop 01

In my first class for Multimedia I was told I had to do a workshop. For this worksop we were asked to explain and image similar to the one shown here At first when I looked at the image I thought it would be easy enough to explain. Then when I thought about it it started to confuse me. I do not drive and have not even done my theory test yet so I do not really understand the rules of the road. Obviously I would not understand the rules of the road not have studied them. Then I thought to myself  that I am in a car with my parents driving nearly everyday so how could I not understand how I had never noticed how a crossroads worked before. This really frustrated me. The problem is that in my head I understand it but writing it out or explaining it is something I found really difficult. This is obviously something I need to work on and I'm hopping that writing in this blog will help me get more comfortable writing out my work done in class and assignment work. Writing in a blog is

Favourite Game (week 1)

My faveourite game is Super Mario Bros on Wii. I have been playing Mario since I was really young. I love how you can pick different characters to play like Mario, Luigi or Yoshi. I love all of the sounds added to this game like the noise when Mario dies and the game restarts or when Mario gets coins it adds a real fun aspect to the game. I love how every level has a different theme like level 7 is a snow theme and level 8 is a halloween theme. I got this Image using Creative Commons https://www.deviantart.com/imavalible1/art/New-Super-Mario-Bros-Revenge-590597734 hammy
